Summary

I made it up to the 70% mark。 Eh, the story was very mediocre and predictable。 "Guy doesn't believe in love but then ends up falling in love"。 It saddened me that it turned out this way because the characters themselves had all the qualities I look for。 Throughout the story, I feel like I was waiting for that moment where things turn around and the story becomes striking like I expected it to be。 Unfortunately that didn't happen。 I made it up to the 70% mark。 Eh, the story was very mediocre and predictable。 "Guy doesn't believe in love but then ends up falling in love"。 It saddened me that it turned out this way because the characters themselves had all the qualities I look for。 Throughout the story, I feel like I was waiting for that moment where things turn around and the story becomes striking like I expected it to be。 Unfortunately that didn't happen。 。。。more

By far my favourite book by Lisa Kleypas。 I devoured this one in one sitting。 The affection between Cassandra and Tom is so genuine。 Cassandra is so patient and generous and uhh I love her。 Also, watching Tom acknowledging his feelings little by little was so satisfying。

a typical grumpy/sunshine romance but so so satisfying。 i don't think you could find a more genuinely good protagonist than cassandra ravenel - she was kind and caring and didn't hesitate for a second to adopt a ten year old child as her own after meeting him once, because it was the right thing to do。 tom was endearing as well, completely oblivious to his feelings even though he was drowning in them。 he understood cassandra's value and never took her for granted, cherishing her just as she dese a typical grumpy/sunshine romance but so so satisfying。 i don't think you could find a more genuinely good protagonist than cassandra ravenel - she was kind and caring and didn't hesitate for a second to adopt a ten year old child as her own after meeting him once, because it was the right thing to do。 tom was endearing as well, completely oblivious to his feelings even though he was drowning in them。 he understood cassandra's value and never took her for granted, cherishing her just as she deserved。 they were so cute (the marriage 'contract' redaction chapter in particular comes to mind) and also hot (the library scene。 whew)。 i am glad i decided to give miss kleypas another chance after disliking devil in winter so intensely years ago。 i look forward to reading more of her books 。。。more

I haven’t read many HR yet (only Bridgerton series) but man this one was way better honestly。 Better writing (sorry JQ lovers), no forced marriages, just the right amount of drama, and less focused on men being whorish rakes lol。 Def gonna read more LK in the future!

Cassandra enjoys social outings, desires a traditional marriage with children, and to run a homestead。 She is unfailingly kind and polite, generous and obedient。That said, I did enjoy Tom’s and Cassandra’s courtship and gradual growing affection toward one another。 Their intellectual conversations / lighthearted disagreements about the meanings behind various famous novels, and the importance of romance in relationships, were both fun and fascinating。 The characters had a sweet and wholesome sort of romantic chemistry with one another, which was enjoyable to experience on the page。 And when the inevitable villains of the piece make their appearance toward the center of the book, Tom is given the opportunity to showcase both his Sheldon Cooper-esque and William Darcy-esque tendencies to brilliant effect and come to Cassandra’s rescue in a deftly written turn of plot by Kleypas。For comic relief, I also thoroughly enjoying the surprising insertion of Basil, the homeless Oliver-Twist esque Orphan, who charms Tom, and not-so-casually reminds the wealthy businessman of his humble beginnings。 With the help and insistence of Cassandra, the magnate reluctantly takes the brash boy with questionable hygiene under his wing, in an almost Little Orphan Annie-like fashion。 If I had one quibble with this book, its that I found its pacing to be a bit off。 As I mentioned, the chief action, villain insertion, and seeming climax of the novel, appear around the 50 percent mark, as does the fun marital contract negotiation scene, which was one of my favorites in the novel。 After that, the book just kind of meanders toward its conclusion, in a way that’s pleasant enough, but was a bit underwhelming overall。That said, I had so much fun reading Chasing Cassandra。 I hope that Ms。 Kleypas is enticed by its success to feature more non-traditional romantic male leads, like Tom Severin, in her future stories。 。。。more

Each book in the Ravenels series is a little surprise。 Depending on the book, the surprise is good or bad。 This one was a good little surprise。 It is certainly different。 The story was a lot more meandering than usual and the pacing was expectedly atrocious (similar to all the books in this series)。。。 But I still enjoyed it despite these issues。 I blame it on the sugary sweet romance。 Lisa Kleypas romances are usually very sweet in the overly Hallmark card-like declarations of love and heart eye Each book in the Ravenels series is a little surprise。 Depending on the book, the surprise is good or bad。 This one was a good little surprise。 It is certainly different。 The story was a lot more meandering than usual and the pacing was expectedly atrocious (similar to all the books in this series)。。。 But I still enjoyed it despite these issues。 I blame it on the sugary sweet romance。 Lisa Kleypas romances are usually very sweet in the overly Hallmark card-like declarations of love and heart eyes and wooing and all that, but this one was almost nauseatingly sweet。 It was sweetness on steroids。 There was so much fluffiness and sweetness and kissy kissiness packed into this little book。 The story was low angst and low drama。 I could almost describe it as cheery in some spots。 There were a few little drama moments but nothing even close to any angst。 The plot twists were predictable。 The story highs and lows were fairly even。 No heart wrenching moments or overly swoony moments either。 It was in one word: cute。TW // s*xual assault (view spoiler)[There is an attempted rape in the story。 Clarifying what I mentioned above, that is the most dramatic thing to happen。 (hide spoiler)]Maybe my brain has had too much of the Ravenels and it short-circuited in reading this, because I would usually not be so into a book like this where everything is so pleasant and nothing much happens。。。 There is nothing overly well done here or anything horrid。 The characters are fairly loveable。 The plot is smooth。 The ending is neatly tied in a bow。 No one cries much or gets their heart broken。 Cassandra was like a little beam of sunshine。 And Tom had no right to be that scrumptiously attractive。 This book was engaging and fun and I wanted to keep reading because I wanted these two to get their happily ever after。 This is sort of a sunshine and grump couple falling in love story and the largest obstacle in their way are their own stubborn feelings。 And add a gallon of syrupy sweetness on top and you will get this almost fairytale-like story where nothing truly goes wrong and everyone is happy go lucky。 。。。more

Not Kleypas' best。 Cassandra and Tom didn't have any real depth and the fact that there wasn't any conflict in the story didn't help matters。 The plot revolves around Tom's motivation not to do something, which ends up dragging the story instead of making it interesting。 Not Kleypas' best。 Cassandra and Tom didn't have any real depth and the fact that there wasn't any conflict in the story didn't help matters。 The plot revolves around Tom's motivation not to do something, which ends up dragging the story instead of making it interesting。 。。。more
